Lies, Damn Lies and Statistics! How to avoid the most common statistical issues that are seen in the statistical modeling review committee

PERLOC Event
November 19, 2025 in Virtual

On November 19 at 6 pm Eastern /3 pm Pacific, join us for a Community Conversation on quantitative research publishing and reviewing led by Tim Stelzer of the Department of Physics at the University of Illinois.

The proliferation of sophisticated quantitative analysis within PER offers many exciting opportunities, but also several important challenges.  It is easy to be overwhelmed or intimidated by these methods, both when writing and when reviewing articles.  During this discussion, we will emphasize the importance of "statistical sense making" in PER research.  We will show how a conceptual understanding the expression stderr= s/sqrt(N)   allows you determine the appropriate level of statistical analysis as well as the claims that analysis supports.

Survey Question (Prior to meeting): What is your biggest concern when writing or reviewing the statistics in a quantitative analysis in PER? Please visit https://forms.gle/xxJGAkVLWj6UJKq29 to answer this survey.

Zoom information can be found on AAPT Communities.
