This editorial by Michael Thoennessen, Editor-in-Chief of the American Physical Society, articulates guidelines for using respectful language, in keeping with the "Diversity, Inclusion, and Respect" component of the 2019 APS Strategic Plan. The editorial discusses the importance of inclusive, nonjudgmental language in idea exchange among scientists. It also explains the position of the APS in addressing gender bias and encouraging use of gender-neutral language  in correspondence and manuscripts.
