This 2010 book was written to help college teachers implement evidence-based instructional practices to enhance student achievement and engagement. The book is organized around seven learning principles: 1. Importance of students' prior knowledge; 2) Importance of students' organization of that knowledge; 3) The role of motivation, 4) How students attain mastery; 5) Goal-directed practice; 6) How the classroom environment impacts student learning; and 7) Factors in the development of self-directed learning. One chapter is devoted to each of these principles, along with discussion of relevant research and suggestions for implementing research-based instructional methods.
