Bloom's Taxonomy of Educational Objectives is one of the most widely-used methods in the world for classifying observable levels of expertise in educational settings. The taxonomy of knowledge-based goals consists of six stages ascending in order from lower-to-higher levels of cognitive expertise: knowledge, comprehension, application, analysis, synthesis, evaluation. The taxonomy of skills-based goals consists of seven tiers: perception, set, guided response, mechanism, complex overt response, adaptation, and organization. The taxonomy of affect-based goals consists of five tiers: receiving, responding, valuing, organization, and characterization by a value or value complex. Written in 1956, the book Taxonomy of educational objectives: the classification of educational goals retains its relevance today as an effective framework for designing educational goals through the lens of student outcomes.
