This volume is part of the 2015 Conference of the International Research Group on Physics Teaching (GIREP), held July 6-10, 2015, in Wroclaw, Polant at the Uniwersytet Wroclawski. The conference was co-hosted by the European Physical Society: Physics Education Division. This volume is a compendium of selected contributions to GIREP 2015 and is part of the larger book series, Springer Proceedings in Physics (SPPHY, volume 190). This volume introduces readers to the problem of identifying strategies and tools to improve physics teaching and learning so as to help students acquire "key competences" in the form of knowledge, skills and attitudes that are fundamental for every member of society. Given the role of physics as a field strongly connected not only to digital competence but also to several other key competences, this conference provided a forum for in-depth discussions of related issues. Specific topics include mathematical modeling in physics, eyetracking in research, cluster analysis of engineering students' conceptions about modeling, research-based teaching materials for geometric optics, preliminary data on the SSQ-HOPE Questionnaire, representational issues in teaching about matter, using dynamic visualizations of multi-body physics problems, hydrogels in the classroom, and training preservice and in-service secondary teachers in quantum physics concepts.
