| Abstract Title: | An Assessment Design Rubric for a Reformed Introductory Physics Curriculum |

| Abstract: | Matter and Interactions (M&I) is an introductory physics course that ventures beyond pedagogical innovation by altering course content and emphasis, thus defining new learning goals. For example, one of the central learning goals of M&I emphasizes the construction of models of physical systems starting from fundamental principles. It follows that new learning goals necessitate new assessments. In this paper we present a rubric developed to inform the design of test problems and assess not only content knowledge but also students' approach to problem solving. In addition, we present research findings that informed the development of our rubric includingthe scaffolding of student learning of the new approach to problem solving. Although our focus is on assessment of the M&I curriculum, our work has implications for assessment design in general. |
