| Abstract Title: | In-Service Science Teachers' Newtonian Conceptual Understanding before & after a One-Week Workshop |

| Abstract: | Out of field teaching, when teachers are assigned to teach subjects that do not match their training or education, is an issue across the country but is especially prevalent in subjects such as physics. Yet even for those with undergraduate course work in physics, they may not possess Newtonian conceptual understanding of force and motion, especially if they experienced traditional physics courses. Thus, effective professional development is necessary to correct conceptual understanding in our science teachers to prevent perpetuating these misunderstandings. This presentation investigates the effects of a one week workshop for in-service teachers on the teachers' conceptual understanding of force and motion using the Force and Motion Conceptual Evaluation as the pretest and posttest. Teacher feedback was also used to gauge the effectiveness of the workshop, including improving the teachers' classroom strategies for teaching force and motion. |
