Abstract Title: Addressing Barriers to Conceptual Understanding in IE Physics Courses
Abstract: We report on an NSF sponsored intervention, Thinking in Physics (TIP), which we have developed to help students with weak scientific reasoning skills, as measured by low preinstruction scores on the Lawson Test of Scientific Reasoning Ability.   Without such special help, such students are unlikely to achieve a good conceptual understanding of introductory mechanics.
