Abstract Title: | Understanding and Teaching Quantum Interpretations in Modern Physics Courses |
---|---|
Abstract: | While expert physicists may agree on how to apply the mathematical formalism of quantum mechanics, instructors often hold different views regarding the role of interpretation of quantum phenomena when teaching an introductory course on modern physics. There has been relatively little research in the physics education community on the variation in student perspectives in interpreting quantum phenomena, and how these instructional choices impact student thinking. We investigate two modern physics courses taught at the University of Colorado where the instructors held markedly different views on how to teach students about quantum processes, and find significant differences in how students from these two courses responded to end-of-term surveys designed to probe their attitudes and beliefs about quantum mechanics. |
