Abstract Title: | Children’s Attitudes about Science as a Result of Informal Science Education |
---|---|
Abstract: | The JILA Physics Frontier Center Partnerships for Informal Science Education in the Community (PISEC) provides informal after-school inquiry-based science teaching opportunities for university participants with children typically underrepresented in science. PISEC is in the process of validating the Children's Attitude Survey (CAS), which is based on the Colorado Learning Attitudes about Science Survey (designed to measure college students' attitudes about science and the nature of science.) The CAS measures children's attitudes about science and the nature of science. We present pre- and post-semester results for several semesters of the PISEC program, and demonstrate that, unlike most introductory physics courses in college, after-school informal science programs support and promote positive attitudes about science. This work is supported, in part, by NSF # 0551010, the JILA AMO PFC. |
