Abstract Title: Revising curricular materials using cognitive resources
Abstract: We designed an instructional unit discussing the physics of solar cells as part of an investigation into students' use of cognitive resources.  This study resulted in a body of written and verbal data which we analyzed and examined for evidence of resource activation.  The analysis gives insight into how students build understanding of a complex physics topic, and guidance for how to revise the unit.  We present examples of resource activation in the data, outline the changes we made to the unit based on this data, and present results demonstrating the effectiveness of the changes.
