Abstract Title: | Undergraduate Competences in Defining: The Interplay Between Examples, Criteria, and Crafted Definitions |
---|---|
Abstract: | This poster presents qualitative video data analysis of the process of crafting definitions. In our data, small groups of undergraduate physical science majors craft a definition of the phenomenon of threshold for the purpose of helping younger people identify it in the world. Crafting a definition is a design problem, requiring the balance of many (sometimes) competing criteria. We will name and provide evidence for student competences as part of building an exploratory framework for how the process of defining proceeds. We will also show how students were able to productively use their definition to make sense of novel examples. |
