Abstract Title: Including evidence in lecture-format courses: comparing videos and hands-on experiments and simulations
Abstract: Many physics curricula include a focus on students' use of evidence to develop physics ideas. Our curriculum development efforts have explored how to include a focus on using evidence to develop ideas in a large, lecture format course. In this paper, we compare two approaches: (1) showing students videos of experiments and/or screencasts of simulations, and (2) having students perform experiments and/or work with simulations themselves. We compare the features and limitations of each approach, and describe best practices for effective use of hands-on activities in lecture-settings. We provide examples of students' engagement in science practices during hands-on activities, and report on students' perception of the two approaches.
