Abstract Title: Survey to Characterize Understanding of Measurement Uncertainty and Proportional Reasoning
Abstract: In this poster we will present the latest version of our survey instrument to probe undergraduate non-science majors understanding of measurement uncertainty and proportional reasoning. Using everyday items (scales, luggage, and kittens) and activities (weighing oneself and traveling) we have attempted to create an interview instrument and protocol that evokes and accommodates a wide range of responses and interpretations. We will show results that suggest that our population has a very difficult time applying measurement uncertainty and proportional reasoning, even after instruction designed to improve this group's understanding of these principles.
