| Abstract Title: | Examining metacognition and epistemology in introductory labs: Video Workshop |

| Abstract: | The purpose of this active-participation workshop is to generate community discussion on what students' metacognition and epistemological cognition might look like in introductory physics labs, how can we as researchers identify these constructs in video data of students engaged in laboratory activities, implications we can draw about lab-based teaching and learning through such investigation, and implications for current and future work within PER. The video-data in this workshop comes from a single group of 4 students working on a 2-week lab in an introductory physics course for life science majors. During the workshop participants will break into small groups of 6-8 to view and analyze segments of the video. Through moderated discussions within and between the small groups, we hope to further the conversation within PER about the constructs of metacognition and epistemology, specifically as they apply to laboratory settings. |
