Abstract Title: Developing a Reliable Coding Scheme for Identifying Resources
Abstract: By using the resource-based model of cognition, physics education researchers have been able to develop a more complete understanding of the fine-grained details of students reasoning. Many studies that use the resource-based model of cognition derive their findings from strictly qualitative analyses of data. These studies have been invaluable; however the qualitative nature of these studies limits the scope of knowledge that we can gain by using the resource-based model of cognition. By using mixed methods of data analysis we can discover and communicate patterns that we would be unable to if we limited our analysis to strictly qualitative methods. In order for a mixed methods approach to be viable, we must develop reliable coding schemes for identifying resources. In this poster, we present a coding scheme, and the associated reliability measures, that we developed for identifying resources.
