Abstract Title: Attitudes towards experimental physics in Finnish physics students
Abstract: Colorado Learning Attitudes About Science Survey for Experimental Physics (E-CLASS) is a survey for assessing whether students have expert-like attitudes towards experimental physics. We administered the E-CLASS questionnaire to students taking the introductory and intermediate laboratory courses at the University of Helsinki. When asked how they felt experimental physicists would answer, both groups of students had a fairly high score of expert agreement (22.4 and 22.9 points for introductory and intermediate course students, respectively). However, they did not feel the statements applied to their own work. The students on the introductory course had more expert-like attitudes than the students on the intermediate course (15.8 and 17.0 points, respectively). The statements to which the younger students answered more favorably were statements concerning independent application, whereas the older students scored higher in statements concerning error analysis.
