Abstract Title: Expanding the PICUP community of practice
Abstract: The mission of the Partnership for Integration of Computation into Undergraduate Physics (PICUP) is to expand the role of computation in the undergraduate physics curriculum. A major tool to facilitate this expansion is the PICUP workshop, which functions in a similar way to the new faculty workshop, in that invitees engage and learn about educational practices associated with integrating, in this case, computation into their curriculum designs. With this focus on community building and engagement in the legitimate peripheral practices of the PICUP community, we have developed a project that applies the communities of practice framework to understand how the PICUP community develops over time. Presented in this poster are the initial stages of this work that contrasts the perceptions and experiences of attendees of the PICUP workshop (peripheral members of the community) with those of the central members of the PICUP community (workshop organizers).
