Abstract Title: Investigating student understanding of bipolar-junction transistor circuits*
Abstract: As part of an ongoing effort to investigate the learning and teaching of analog electronics in physics and engineering courses, we have been examining student understanding of common bipolar junction transistor (BJT) circuits.  Many of these circuits are quite complex, and we have found that most students are unable to analyze circuits derived from the common-emitter amplifier. As a result, we developed a suite of research tasks, often involving either simplified or modified circuits, in order to better probe and document the limits of student understanding of the behavior of BJT circuits.  Findings from several of these tasks, as well as specific examples of student work, will be presented and implications for instruction will be discussed.
