Abstract Title: | Space Sciences as a Context for College Physics |
---|---|
Abstract: | Curricular materials related to Space Sciences can be used to engage college students. These concepts can be taught directly, such as understanding the geometry required for solar eclipses or estimating the speed of a coronal mass ejection. Alternatively, topics in space science can be employed to teach physics content. Solar cycles can be used to help students understand period and frequency, and auroral activity can be modeled in an E & M class as a ring of electrical flow. Using research based methods, our group has been developing, testing, and implementing materials for all levels of college, including content for pre-service teachers, non-science astronomy courses, service courses for STEM majors, and upper level physics courses. The materials we have developed are freely available for public use and include clicker questions, homework sets, lecture tutorials, and inquiry based labs materials. |
