Abstract Title: Student learning: How do we improve grades without lowering the standards?
Abstract: In order to improve student learning in our introductory courses, and potentially decrease the drop, failure, and withdrawal (DFW) rates, we are using a modified version of competency-based grading or proficiency-based grading that we denote as Assessment of Learning Proficiency and Competency Achievement (ALPaCA).  In our ALPaCA grading system, the problems on each graded assignment are linked to one or more course objectives.  Once an objective is introduced, questions linked to that objective continue to appear on subsequent assignments, allowing student to demonstrate proficiency or competency, possibly later in the semester. The student's course grade is then determined based on how proficient or competent they are with each course objective.  Preliminary results have allowed us to determine what course objectives students struggle with the most and target future teaching to address those objectives.
