Abstract Title: Modern Physics Laboratory Students' Ideas about Physics
Abstract: Laboratory courses in modern physics are often the first opportunities students have to experiment with specialized measurement instrumentation, conduct independent investigations in a community environment, and exercise skills they are likely to use in contemporary physics research. As such, it is worth examining students' ideas about doing physics in this context; this study does so using beginning- and end-of-semester semi-structured interviews. I will present interview results and discussion regarding students' ideas about experimenting, research skills, careers in physics, and experiences that make them feel like physicists.
