Abstract Title: Using STERGMs to Model Tie Persistence in Students' Out-of-Class Networks
Abstract: Networks are a powerful technique for analyzing student performance in physics courses because they take into account both the effect of the individual characteristics of each student and also the effect of the social environment students are embedded within. Separable temporal exponential random graph models (STERGMs) are a tool which allows the modeling of the formation and dissolution of ties in a network over time. In this work, STERGMs are used to model the self-reported out-of-class networks of students in two sections of an introductory physics course for engineers. While students' out-of-class partners often reflected the groups they were assigned to in class, the formation and persistence of out-of-class ties are related to social dynamics. The ties that persisted tended to be those that both members found valuable and those that connected students to pairs of students who were themselves connected (i.e. friends of friends).
