Abstract Title: | Effective Grain-Size of Mastery-Style Online Homework Levels |

Abstract: | Mastery-style online homework has replaced traditional online homework in a preparatory physics course at the University of Illinois since 2014. Although repetition of problems is inherently built into mastery learning, a persistent complaint by students is the amount of time they spend re-doing problems they solved correctly because they missed a different problem in the mastery level. This is one motivation to consider the grain-size of the competencies in each level; if the scope of levels is too broad, frustration is warranted, but if level scope is too narrow, the problem-solving process may be disjointed. An initial study was done in the preparatory class to see how students performed on Uniform Circular Motion homework, when it was presented as a single level or broken into two smaller, more skill-specific levels. Students with the two smaller levels had much higher rates of mastery on the homework than those with the single level, though performance and time spent on following levels were similar. Specific results and plans to replicate the experiment will be presented. |
