| Abstract Title: | Beyond Disability as Weakness: Perspectives from Students with Disabilities |
|---|---|
| Abstract: | Societal views on disability, largely based on the "able-bodied" perspective, often align with the medical model of disability, which focuses on disability as a deficit or flaw in need of a solution. The social model of disability emerged as an alternative and views individuals with impairments as disabled by societies' construction of barriers. While the social model has been useful in igniting social change, it has also been criticized for failure to acknowledge variability and differences across individuals. We conducted interviews with students with disabilities to understand their experiences in STEM courses, during which many participants shared their perspectives on their personal experience with disability. We use interpretative phenomenological analysis to highlight both similarities and differences in their experiences and their interactions with outsiders' views of their disability. To contextualize these perspectives, we explore how they compare to popular models of disability. |
