Abstract Title: Let’s talk about equity: Two-year college students’ and physics culture
Abstract: Acknowledging and teaching about the influence that culture has on physics learning and research may support future physicists in changing that culture. We taught a week-long equity unit in a two-year college introductory calculus-based physics course, focusing on cultural effects in physics. The demographics of these courses look vastly different than those of the physics field; students of color outnumber white students. Given this reversal of representation, our aim is to increase awareness of racial inequity in the larger physics community and facilitate the development of support systems to move forward in STEM careers. We collected and analyzed written student reflections from these classes to better understand the views students of color bring to the equity conversation. We identified themes in their ideas about equity in physics and we argue that their responses indicate that they value explicit discussions about equity in physics classrooms.
