Abstract Title: Investigating student design of electronic systems*
Abstract: Upper-division laboratory courses provide students with an important opportunity to learn and develop skills that are critical for experimental physics.  In particular, such courses may require students to design, model, and troubleshoot a variety of systems.  As part of an ongoing effort to investigate the learning and teaching of electronics, we have begun to examine student approaches to circuit design.  While there is a large research base exploring the design process from engineering education researchers, very few of these studies have expressly focused on circuit design in electronics.  To this end, we have conducted a series of think-aloud interviews in which students were asked to design a circuit for a practical, everyday application: a battery powered night light.  We present our findings from preliminary interviews and discuss implications for instruction.
