Abstract Title: | Writing Physics Books Like Harry Potter: How to Make Physics Textbooks More Enjoyable |
---|---|
Abstract: | The way we interact with physics textbooks is totally unlike our relationship with most other types of books; i.e. we don't read textbooks for pleasure, aesthetic and otherwise. Nor do we become fascinated by deep mystery which we yearn to resolve. Using literary and rhetorical analysis, and creative writing ideas, I analyze several common physics textbooks, and look at what they're doing well--and poorly--compared to the books we read for fun, e.g. novels and comic books and mysteries. Through this study, I will propose guidelines for physics writing which should help authors ignite the flame of mystery and intrigue, closer to the mystery and intrigue that scientists actually feel when they're making discoveries. |
