| Abstract Title: | A Survival Analysis of Irregular Enrollment Patterns |

| Abstract: | Research indicates that a significant portion of students are enrolled part-time or halt their enrollment for a non-summer term at some point during their academic career. Students often indicate financial stress as a factor for not enrolling full-time. There is however an uncertainty if such irregular enrollment patterns are detrimental to graduation. In an effort to characterize and understand the impact of irregular enrollment patterns on student success a survival analysis is conducted. Making use of Markov chains, graduation rates are examined for students who go unenrolled for at least one non-summer term. The goal of this research is to quantify the impact of students halting their education. More so this research seeks to understand if halting significantly delays graduation beyond the un-enrolled semesters. The survival analysis considers various demographic groups while also comparing STEM and non-STEM students to quantify differential outcomes. |
