Abstract Title: Variations in Patterns of Persistence
Abstract: Despite improved college accessibility, women, Black, Hispanic and American Indian or Alaskan Native students continue to be underrepresented in physics, mathematics, and computer science. More so, the gender and racial/ethnic gap widens from enrollment to graduation as students from these underrepresented groups transition out of the majors more frequently than men and White or Asian students. While there exist several theoretical frameworks modeling persistence and retention, a common theme amongst them involves the process by which students respond to challenges. Accordingly, this research explores the responses of different demographic groups to challenges within their major.  In particular, this study makes use of mathematical models to explore differences in retention at a large state institution according to the number of lower grades (defined as a C, D, F or withdraw) a student receives within their major.  This work represents a contribution over prior works that consider overall GPA when analyzing retention.
