Abstract Title: What’s happening in traditional and inquiry-based introductory labs? An integrative analysis at a large research university
Abstract: Introductory lab courses have long been an essential component of physics instruction, but questions have been raised about their curricular role and value. As a first step toward reform, it is essential to understand the dynamics of what happens in the lab. Using an integrative approach that includes ethnography, surveys, assessments, and other tools, we mapped out the thinking, instruction, and social dynamics that take place in traditional and inquiry-based labs at a large public university. Findings will be discussed. We thank the National Science Foundation for support.
