| Abstract Title: | Recruiting future physics teachers with a summer enrichment program |
|---|---|
| Abstract: | The shortage of well-qualified physics teachers is a crisis on a national scale. To address this issue, our institution has successfully applied for a Robert Noyce Teaching Scholarship grant. As part of the programming we've developed from the grant support, we have created a field-based summer enrichment program designed to encourage current students (not on the educational track) to consider transferring to our physics teacher-prep major. The Summer Teacher Exploration Program for Undergraduate Physics (STEP-UP) is a 3-week program that gives students a crash course in pedagogy and learning sciences and then allows them the opportunity to design and actually teach lessons in local K-12 classrooms. In this presentation we will describe STEP-UP in detail and discuss how the program changed participants' views on teaching and its viability as a future career path. |
