Abstract Title: STEP UP 4 Women: Examining students’ responses to lesson interventions
Abstract: This presentation reports on work related to the STEP UP 4 Women project.  Eleven high school physics teachers implemented two lessons developed as part of this project during the Fall 2017 semester. One lesson focused on physics careers, while the other lesson centered on a discussion of the underrepresentation of women in physics. Data collected include teacher reflections, student open-ended survey responses, and student work such as career profiles in which they envision themselves achieving their goals with a physics degree and short essays in which the students discuss the underrepresentation of women in physics. We will present emerging themes from student work and discuss implications for improving the lessons to best recruit women into physics.
