| Abstract Title: | Illustrating a Faculty Community’s Productive Teaching Talk and the Facilitation Moves That Supported It |
|---|---|
| Abstract: | The New Faculty Workshop Faculty Online Learning Community (NFW-FOLC) Program supports new physics and astronomy faculty as they are implementing research based instructional strategies. One goal of the program is to help FOLC members develop as reflective teachers. Given this goal, we wanted to see how our participants were talking about their teaching during their biweekly FOLC meetings and what opportunities for reflection this talk afforded. In this poster we focus on a meeting segment that we argue is an example of a uniquely productive conversation about teaching. Specifically, participants are grappling with the ways to motivate students to attend class. We use constructs from the literature on teachers' workgroup conversations to help describe why this meeting was productive. Additionally, we tie critical points in the conversation to moves the facilitator made and propose practical suggestions for encouraging this type of talk in either online or in-person faculty learning communities. |
