Abstract Title: Intense Outreach: Experiences Shifting University Students’ Identities
Abstract: University physics students may choose to participate in informal physics teaching experiences outside of classes; however, these programs are understudied as part of the physics student's experience. We investigate students' participation in a student group that does science demonstration presentations at K-12 schools. This group offers an intensive week-long outreach trip to schools in rural Michigan. Pre- and post interviews were collected from trip participants and analyzed using a Community of Practice framework to understand the students' experiences as they negotiate their memberships in the outreach and scientific communities. We find students' science identity is influenced by the interactions and experiences they have during this intensive experience. Specifically, we see that due to their experiences on this trip, participants develop a larger capacity to present physics content and become more aligned to the group's mission. As a result, some participants take on more central membership roles within the organization.
