| Abstract Title: | Transforming modeling instruction for a large classroom environment |
|---|---|
| Abstract: | Modeling Instruction (MI) is an active learning, student-centered physics curriculum being implemented at Florida International University. For the last four years, MI has been expanded from a 30 student classroom to one that accommodates up to 100 students. The expansion required specific structural changes for proper implementation, such as strategic use of Learning Assistants (LA), coordinating multiple discussion meetings, and holding a planning meeting with an instructional team across multiple sections. Outcome measures show the expansion is successful in consistently supporting student learning with strong conceptual learning gains across four different instructors. We will also discuss affective and attitudinal measures such as physics identity and anxiety in the classroom. |
