Abstract Title: A Tale of Two Faculty: Differing Perspectives on the Incorporation of Computation into Undergraduate Studies
Abstract: Using computers to solve complex problems (hereafter referred to as computation) has become a fundamental pillar of physics. Yet, despite the ubiquity of computation in both academia and the private sector, most physics departments have yet to embrace computation in a meaningful way. This is in part due to the reluctance of physics faculty to integrate computation into the courses that they teach. As part of a larger project focused on weaving computation into the undergraduate curriculum, we sat down and talked with physics faculty to see what role they felt computation should (and shouldn't) play in undergraduate studies. We present here preliminary results, focusing on two physics instructors with differing views, to get a better understanding of the differences, and similarities, in how physics faculty view computation.
