| Abstract Title: | Discussion Space for People of Color |
|---|---|
| Abstract: | Building off the 2018 PERC People of Color (POC) Discussion Space, we plan to use this parallel session in two ways. First we will continue to form community among POC. Safe spaces are important because they often provide an opportunity for individuals in the group to vocalize shared experiences and utilize their agency to act and speak on their own behalf. Safe spaces also aid in creating solidarity among the group. Thus, this intimate session is intended for individuals who identify as a Person of Color. Second, we will take the discussion further by planning how to distribute the paper created from the 2017 and 2018 sessions in addition to collectively deciding on the next action items of the group.NOTE: People of Color is a term with many different interpretations. We do not want to impose our own ideas of race on individuals' identity. We ask that participants make every effort to arrive within 10 minutes of the start time to cover the rules of engagement for the discussion. |
