| Abstract Title: | Studying the factors that impact the development of community of practice for educators |

| Abstract: | Texas A&M University-Commerce has designed and developed a unique Master program in physics with teaching emphasis to prepare high school teachers with better informed teaching practices by reinforcing content and pedagogical knowledge within a remote global environment. As part of the coursework, students are required to participate in online discussion boards to practice learning and teaching. Using a qualitative approach, we analyze written data of students' comments posted on the online discussion boards. Using the theory of community of practice, we discuss the factors that are vital for having an ongoing and a productive discussion among the members. We examine the role of core members of the community in creating and sharing knowledge, seeding the community discussions, and supporting members of the community to facilitate their path towards becoming full participants. Using this platform, we are able to gain further evidence supporting formation of teacher communities in high schools. |
