Abstract Title: What do Students Know about Electromagnetic Wave Generation?
Abstract: As part of a pilot research project, we asked a dozen graduate students how electromagnetic waves were generated. We found that two-thirds of them could not identify an accelerating charge as a source for electromagnetic radiation. Fully half the grad students could not answer correctly at all. It was also noticed that, among the population that could not give correct responses, male students attempted to talk their way to an answer while the female students made no attempts to talk through possible responses. Somewhat surprised at the strength of these preliminary findings, we are continuing to search for specific types of difficulties related to EM wave generation as well as reasons why students do not seem to grasp this core concept. From here we would like to explore remedies to this gap in student conception, as well as an understanding of this gender difference. Any feedback is appreciated.
