Abstract Title: | Supporting Math Skills in Mastery-Style Learning Exercises |
---|---|
Abstract: | Mastery-style online homework has been used in a preparatory physics course at the University of Illinois for the last several years. Data from students' interactions with the mastery homework showed that some students struggled with the math skills needed to solve problems, even when their conceptual understanding of the physics was sufficient. By adding mastery levels which focused on math skills, first in a familiar math context and then mirrored within a physics context, students were able to master the same physics focused levels more often, with effect sizes up to 0.8 and p<0.0001. |
