| Abstract Title: | Creation of pre-test for an upper-division physics laboratory assessment using think-aloud student interview data |

| Abstract: | Physics laboratory courses are unique learning environments, and assessments that track their impact and improvement are few, especially at the upper-division level. To assess laboratory courses in a way that is sensitive to their unique affordances and limitations, our team is developing assessments for model-based reasoning (MBR) in the context of analog electronics and optics. Our team is also assiduously cataloging the assessment development process to increase the transparency of the process and confidence in the final product. Here, we describe one portion of the creation of a pretest for MBR: think-aloud activities focused on a prototypical pendulum lab. We also discuss some important outcomes, including describing the problem space that students explore, and ways that the pendulum activity is an appropriate pre-test for this assessment. |
