Abstract Title: Exploring Productive Modes of Engagement in the Planetarium
Abstract: Digital planetariums, such as the one recently upgraded at the Iziko South African Museum in Cape Town, offer exciting new possibilities for teaching astronomy. The era of the digital dome brings with it allocentric forms of immersive visualization while also allowing traditional geocentric demonstrations to be revisited in alternative forms. However, it is not yet clear what would constitute effective teaching material and modes of presentation as only limited studies have been carried out in this regard. As a first step towards gaining such an understanding, an instrument was developed and administered to a cohort of introductory astronomy students at the University of Cape Town before and after a planetarium show on a course topic presented by the instructor. This contribution centers on the results from probing student emotional engagement and assessing learning gains regarding the celestial sphere.
