Abstract Title: Transition Matrices Applied to the Force Concept Inventory
Abstract: We consider the transitions that students make in understanding on the Force Concept Inventory (FCI).  This is done by comparing matched pre-test and post-test scores of 9636 students on the FCI and constructing transition matrices.  We observe that that the misconceptions that students have and the progress they make as the result of instruction depends upon where they are starting from.  Transitions matrices allow us to observe progress made by students even when they are getting the answer on the post-test incorrect since the answer choices are ranked from worst to best for each item.
