Abstract Title: | Results from the People of Color Discussion Space at the 2017/2018 PERCs |
---|---|
Abstract: | Discussion spaces for People of Color (POC) can be beneficial for POC to support one another, build solidarity, and feel safe within organizations, communities, and at events. This poster will report the main themes that came up during the 2017 and 2018 PERC People of Color Discussion Spaces. The poster highlights how racism structured within and outside our professional communities shapes the experiences and trajectories of POC in PER and at PER events. The poster will cover topics regarding professional concerns of POC within PER (such as being denied opportunities, taking on uncompensated work to promote equity, and being denigrated by colleagues), the harmful ways in which some "equity-oriented" research constructs POC, and racism at conference locations. This poster is an opportunity for audience members to hear the knowledge generated/shared in these POC spaces and act as partners in dismantling oppressive systems affecting those in our professional communities. This poster will be presented during all three posters sessions. See posters A90, B13, and C58. |
