| Abstract Title: | Faculty Perceptions of Teaching as a Profession development and validation interviews |

| Abstract: | Though nearly half of undergraduate physics students indicate some interest in secondary teaching, high school physics teachers are still in high demand. This disconnect can be traced to perceptions of the teaching profession and the impact those perceptions have on students that would otherwise join the ranks of "teacher". As advisors to those students, either officially or unofficially, college and university faculty greatly influence the path students decide to take. We have developed an instrument to measure Faculty Perceptions of Teaching as a Profession (FPTaP). As part of the development and validation of the instrument, we conducted thirty interviews with faculty from four different colleges and universities. Results of these interviews, as well as a comparison between faculty and student perceptions, will be discussed. This project is supported by NSF DUE-1821710. |
