Abstract Title: | Causal Statements Improve Concept Application |
---|---|
Abstract: | "Forces change momentum" is a causal statement. "Momentum is conserved when there are no outside forces" is a rule. Shifting to the first (causal) statement resulted in tremendous increase in students referencing the impulse-momentum concept and significant improvement in student ability to correctly apply it, elevating student performance to over twice the average for students in an algebra-based introductory mechanics class. Similar results were seen for the work-energy concept. We next consider how to make similar transformations in the narrative for other concepts. |
