Abstract Title: | Framing the Pursuit of a Physics Degree as a Hero's Journey |
---|---|
Abstract: | In a period in which students face a reality of ever-increasing chaos, direction can be difficult to attain, especially in the pursuit of a degree as rigorous and attention-demanding as physics. Our project aims to frame the pursuit at a physics degree as a hero's journey ("The Hero with a Thousand Faces", Campbell, 1949) in order to present discussion points for undergraduates to reflect upon their experiences in a manner that connects them with timeless mythological forms representative of a collective psychology. We also coordinate stages of this journey with various observed subjective experiences from undergraduate STEM students, as reported in "Talking About Leaving", (Seymour, 1994), in conjunction with various modern psychological studies such as "Flow," (Csikszentmihalyi, 1990). Our goal is to help students understand their experience studying physics in a manner that promotes productive, responsible, prideful, and mentally healthy engagement with pursuit of a degree. |
