Abstract Title: Examining students engagement in Planning Investigations practice in a written exam
Abstract: Engaging in scientific practices could help students improve their ability to do science and deepen their disciplinary knowledge in physics. This paper explores students' engagement in the scientific practice of Planning Investigations in an exam setting. We focus our attention on written exams to characterize students' activities associated with Planning Investigations practice in a written exam, compare these activities to students' behaviors in labs setting, and examine the relationship between structure of problem space and students'  engagement in the practice. We employed Think-Aloud interviews to collect data from physics students in introductory college courses. We analyzed students' video recordings through the lenses of model of planning and three components of investigations based on prior laboratory-based studies. We found ten different activities associated with Planning Investigations practice and determined that, students more actively engaged in the Planning Investigations practice if the problem space were less open-ended.
