| Abstract Title: | Chili and mistakes: Students reflect on research |

| Abstract: | This preliminary analysis explores the meanings--both personal feelings and definitions--that undergraduate students ascribe to research. The participants are in the Applying Scientific Knowledge (ASK) program, which brings Wright State University science and math majors into research starting in their second year. Students in the program take a shared research methods class, then join faculty research groups for two semesters. They are interviewed about their experiences and community connections before and after their research experience. This analysis focuses on one part of the interview to probe the question: How do students define or describe the concept of research, and how does that change as they go through the program? We describe emerging interview themes from the first two ASK cohorts, focusing on the physics majors. Students have a mix of personal and professional motives for pursuing research, and often non-technical but nuanced ways of epistemologically distinguishing research. |
